Team Great Britain at the 2017 WBHF Day 2

Game two of the 2017 World Ball Hockey Federation (WBHF) World Championship is over, and the BHi Great Britain Heritage Team is undefeated. They took the win over Team Hungary with a commanding score of 18-0 in what will probably be one of the highest scoring games we’ll see at this tournament. It’s not over yet though, as Team Great Britain will go on to face off against one of the tougher competitors at this year’s WBHFC, Team USA. Still, the win against Hungary is nothing to disregard. They played hard until the final buzzer, but they just couldn’t compete with Great Britain.

The Game

The game took a few minutes to get going, but once it did with McGahey scoring the first goal, the floodgates were open and Hungary just wasn’t able to recover. The score just kept going up with the team taking shot after shot. One thing I would like to mention is Hungary’s goalie. His prowess was actually pretty impressive, and he made some great saves, but it wasn’t enough to stop everything that was getting hurled at him.

This isn’t to say the rest of Team Hungary didn’t have heart. As a spectator, it was clear that the players on Team Hungary still cared nearing the end of the game, which is both rare and refreshing to see being that they were down by a substantial amount. The team gave it their all, but they just couldn’t match up to the level of play Team Great Britain was bringing.

As I said, this was a very high-scoring game. Mitch Scott scored a hat-trick, and Travis Parkin walked away with 5 goals at the end of the game. There was also an impressive level of support coming out of the team yesterday, many of the players finishing the game with multiple assists. It’s undoubtedly impressive to watch a team all playing together for the first time in a tournament like this to gel together the way they have been. Their communication and cooperation has taken them to two wins, and it’s incredibly exciting to think about where they’ll be after tonight’s game against Team USA.

A constant theme when talking to the Great Britain players is that they didn’t want to pick up any bad habits from playing a less intense game, so it was almost nerve-wracking leading up to the game against USA – one of the tougher competitors at the WBHF. The team didn’t let the nerves get to them though, and managed to pull out an absolutely terrific game of ball hockey. More on that in the next wrap up.
